Sample Preparation

While we do specilaise in on-site collection, you are more than welcome to supply your own samples. There are a fw guidelines to follow to ensure that the sample you collect can be properly tested:

KEEP ALL SAMPLES COOL, APPROXIMATELY 4ºC UNTIL DELIVERED TO TWEED LABORATORY CENTRE!

Please note samples are to be received at the laboratory no later than 4.30pm (unless prior notification has been received by 1.00pm) or additional charges may apply.

To Collect a Chemistry Sample (from tap)

Sample Container

  • Use a robust polythene, screw cap bottle holding at least 1L of sample.
  • Container must be clean and free of contaminants (contact Laboratory for free containers).

Collecting the Sample

  • Flush the line for at least three minutes.
  • Fill bottle halfway. Shake container and discard water.
  • Refill to top leaving no air space.

Label Sample Bottle

  • Record time of sampling, date, name of person or company and identification of sample.

 

To Collect a Bacto Sample

Sample Container

  • Use a leak-proof, sterile container.
  • For chlorinated samples use a sterile jar containing Sodium Thiosulphate (contact Laboratory for free containers)

Collecting the Sample

  • Do not rinse the container before taking sample. A minimum volume of 200mL is required.
  • Reticulated Supplies
    • Disinfect the tap (contact Laboratory for details).
    • Let water flow to avoid splashing.
    • Collect sample.
  • Rivers, Lakes and Reservoirs
    • Hold sample bottle near its base and plunge it neck downward below the surface (elbow deep).
    • Push the bottle forward horizontally away from the hand to collect the sample.

Label Sample Bottle

Record time of sampling, date, name of person or company and identification of sample.
